Memorials are an important way to remember a loved one but over time they can become unstable for various reasons including; ground settlement, weathering, or poor installation.
The Parish Council have a legal duty to keep the cemetery safe for visitors, staff and contractors and in line with the recommendations from the Health and Safety Executive and Ministry of Justice, memorial stability testing is completed every 5 years to ensure that the site remains safe.
Testing consists of a hand test carried out by a qualified independent inspector where reasonable pressure is used to check that the memorial is stable. If a memorial is found to be unstable a notice will be placed on it and in some cases, it may be necessary to cordoned off the area or lay the stone flat. We will then contact the grave owner to discuss the work which must be done.
The next memori
al stability testing for the Burial Ground, Church Road will be carried out on 24th June 2026.
