Central Beds Council Home to School Transport Policy Consultation

👀If you have children who are due to move to Secondary School in the coming years and will need to use school transport, PLEASE READ THIS CONSULTATION👀
The proposal is for free transport to be provided ONLY TO NEAREST SCHOOL – this could be out of the current catchment area and would include Cardinal Newman School in Luton, as well as schools in Central Bedfordshire.
There will be a consultation event for the public to attend at Barton Rovers on Thursday 19th June 5-7pm so that you can find out more information.
The deadline to respond to the Consultation is 30th June 2025.
Central Bedfordshire Council are consulting on a proposed change to their mainstream Home to School Transport Policy; to provide transport only to a child’s nearest suitable school, removing the current option of transport to a catchment school.

This change would ensure consistency for pupils – currently some are eligible for transport to both their nearest school and their local authority catchment area school, while others may only be eligible to transport to one school.

It will also bring them in line with Department for Education guidance and neighbouring councils. The consultation is open until 30 June 2025.

Please note: any change to the policy would only apply to new mainstream home to school transport applications, from September 2026. It would not apply to children with an Education, Health and Care Plan, to pupils placed at a school by the council, or to transport for pupils aged 16 and over.
